Edinburgh With An Old Compact Camera - The Canon PowerShot G10
In this day of impressively spec’d cameras and smartphones, it’s hugely refreshing to go old school and use an older camera that delivers beautiful, pleasing images with a distinct character I never feel I can get with current tech.
The Canon PowerShot G10 is one of my favourite cameras of all time. It was first released by Canon in 2008, so it’s getting on a bit and, by todays standards, it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of the latest mirrorless cameras - but, for me, that’s what gives the camera its enormous charm and appeal. Cameras are as subjective as art, but if you’re looking for a small, go-everywhere camera that’s fun and immersive, I really recommend it. It’s also very good on the pocket - a good example costing between £200-£250 pounds.
I absolutely love my latest iPhone and modern cameras, but there’s something about using them that leaves me unfulfilled and yearning for a more immersive and involved experience. For me, a small, go everywhere, compact camera like the G10 fills that need, and its quirks and deficiencies mean I have to engage with the process of taking a photograph in a way that makes photography unpredictable and fun again. It’s got a basic viewfinder (which I personally really like) and is very nice to hold, all of which adds to a really enjoyable, tactile experience. The retro style ISO and Exposure Compensation dials are also really handy and give it a vintage vibe.
The camera’s 14.7 megapixel CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) sensor produces really lovely files that are pleasing straight out of the camera which cuts down on editing - something I’m really grateful for, as I spend too much time in front of the computer as it is. It’s so lovely to be able to just put in your pocket, lose yourself in the photographic process for a few hours and know that you’ll not have to do any more work when you get home.
So, yesterday was a lovely spring day here in Edinburgh and, after a tour, I took my trusty G10 to the Old Town and Princes Street Gardens to try and capture a few interesting shots of the city and the beautiful spring flowers. All the photos are jpeg and required very little or no editing - hope you enjoy them.
